چکیده
The apparent Western predisposition of modern science is well established in the literature. Scholars, over half a century, have argued that North Atlantic White male Caucasian values and beliefs have governed scientific thought and the processes of scientific inquiry. An extensive number of studies document the challenges that young learners from non-Western backgrounds encounter when they become students of (Western) science. There is, however, a prevailing assumption that these challenges cease to exist as those learners grow older. In fact, few studies, if any, mention such challenges encountered by science teachers from non-Western backgrounds. This paper describes some of the unique challenges experienced by science teachers from Sri Lanka and Indonesia when they constructed scientific knowledge in the context of in-service professional development. The findings revealed that science teachers from non-Western backgrounds did experience difficulties when they crossed culturalfrontiers. For instance, the teachers preferred practices that were endemic to the traditional teaching of Western science, and they resisted attempts to alter their perceived ideas of Western scientific knowledge. It is possible to conclude, therefore, that science teachers from non-Western backgrounds continue to be challenged by Western science, although the challenges they encounter are different to those of nonWestern students.

Integrated Approach for Cellular Manufacturing a Case Study (TECHNICAL NOTE)
To cope with fast changing customer requirements, industrial demands and to meet stringent specifications of customers Cellular Manufacturing Systems has become an effective tool in hands of manufacturers. Most of the published literature on cell formation earlier considers only the data available in the route sheets and ignored subproblems associated with cell formation. There is a need to dev...

EDITOR’S NOTE Geopersia is published biannually by the College of Science, University of Tehran, Iran. The College of Science published “Journal of Science”, which covered all fields of basic science, from 1968 to 2010. It was then decided that the College’s journals should be more specialized, and hence publication of Geopersia was launched. Geopersia aims to publish peer-reviewed original...
متن کاملSupercritical Fluid Extraction of Carotenoid from Microalgae with Projected Thermodynamic Models (RESEARCH NOTE)
In this study, two thermodynamic models (regular solution theory and equation of state) were applied to obtain carotenoid solubility in the supercritical carbon dioxide solvent. Theoretical data obtained from the models were compared with the experimental data extracted from a published paper. The use of equation of state as an empirical correlation for collating and predicting liquidliquid and...

متن کاملClose Following Behavior: Estimation of Desired Gap Headway Using Loop Detector Data (TECHNICAL NOTE)
The desired gap headway of drivers, while close following, represents the main parameter in determining the following distance between vehicles. This paper uses the raw individual vehicles data taken from loop detectors for millions of vehicles used M25 and M42 in order to estimate the gap headway distributions between successive pairs of vehicles. The data used in this paper were filtered so...
